This morning Leslie and I were at a new clinical site. We are still working in the Mental Health clinics, but at a different location within the city, rather than outside closer to the townships. We worked with “Smokey” as she is known among our group because she sits at her desk and chain smokes while patients come in to see her. If she has a patient who is very upset, she will offer them a cigarette to calm their nerves. That would never happen at home! It was in interesting day in which we got to see the difficult side to healthcare; the side where you have to call and refer and jump through hoops to get anywhere. The process makes it very difficult for a patient to receive the help and treatment that they need. It was frustrating watching Sister B. (aka Smokey) have make call after call to help just one patient be admitted to a long-term care facility. We also made a visit to casualty (the emergency center) and that was an interesting experience all in itself. It is so strange watching different healthcare professionals (even nurse to nurse) not be in open communication and working as a team to provide care for a patient, it is an “every professional for themselves” philosophy here.
We were at clinical until noon and we came back, grabbed lunch, and headed to campus for our senior sem class. We had class presentation on our papers that we wrote so we were done with class early! I came back and immediately started on my teaching plan for next week when I have to lead and teach class. I went down to the desk of Langerry around dinner time, because we have a security system now in place. The doors will now lock automatically and we need a swipe card to get in and out of the building. Pretty high-tech! I have spent the remainder of the night working on homework and getting ready for tomorrow!
