October 3, 2007

This morning we had a clinical site visit at the Motherwell clinic in the Motherwell township. The kombi was an hour late picking us up…flashbacks of our first day waiting for the kombi to take us to NMMU and coming an hour and a half late. Well, we finally made it to Motherwell and we met with one of their doctors on staff and he explained how the clinic operates and gave us a tour. The clinic serves 400-500 patients each day with TB treatment, HIV/AIDS and ARV medication, medication and injection dispersion, mother and child visits, a labor and delivery ward, and an antenatal clinic. It was a very well-run and organized clinic. We were able to see a four hour old baby in the labor and delivery part of the clinic! After the clinic visit was over we went back home to grab a quick lunch and change for our political science class. We were doing presentations on our papers in class. Katherine and I went first and talked about the Freedom Charter and the importance it has had in South African history. It was a nice feeling being able to hand in the paper and be done with it! We came back to Langerry where I had the best of intentions to do homework…but instead I started organizing our travel plans for in November. Then Didi and Alex came into our room to see if we wanted to go to a jazz club to listen to Didi’s friend play. Carrie and I said, “What the heck!” and we got ready and went out for a glass of wine and listened to her play. It was so much fun! We met a few new people; the music and company were very pleasant! We stayed for about an hour and a half and then Carrie and I walked back home to attempt a little more homework!
